Frequently Asked Questions
Who can join Strathmore Chess?
Anyone! Kids, adults, beginners, and casual players are all welcome. If children are new to the club, we ask that they are accompanied by a parent or guardian until they feel comfortable.
Do I need to know how to play chess?
No experience is required! We welcome complete beginners and help players build their skills from the ground up.
Do I need to bring my own board or chess set?
Nope! We provide boards, pieces, and clocks. Just bring yourself and a love for the game.
Is there a fee to join?
There’s no membership fee to join at this time. We are volunteer run and our primary focus is growing the love of the game. Please support Hob’s Gaming Café by purchasing snacks or drinks if you wish as they generously host us.
Are there tournaments or competitive play?
We sometimes run impromptu tournaments on Fridays, but most nights are casual. We have plans to run structured tournaments and Anthony is currently becoming a national Chess Arbiter to assist in this. Everyone is welcome to play at their own pace and comfort level.
Can I get coaching or lessons?
Yes! Anthony offers coaching for beginners and developing players up to approximately 1500 ELO. Sessions can be one-on-one or in small groups. See the Coaching page for details.
What should I bring?
Just yourself and a positive attitude! Water is allowed but please do not bring outside food or drinks
How do I get in touch with the club?
You can reach Anthony directly at StrathmoreChess@gmail.com, or visit us on Fridays and introduce yourself. Everyone is welcome, no prior experience required!
